Barnwell Print | Charity Fundraising Round Britain for MS Circumnavigation of Britain by Sea for MS Society
The Coastal Voyager For the technically minded, Coastal Voyager is based on the design of a New Zealand Coastguard vessel. She was build there in 2001.
She is licensed to the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency Category 4. The deep V hull (23 degree dead rise) means that she gives an amazingly smooth ride even in a heavy sea. The 12 wraparound seats ensure crew and passengers are held firmly in place. Equipment carried includes DSC VHF and a Garmin Chart Plotter.
Coastal Voyager is powered by two Mercury Optimax 200 outboard engines – two-and-half litre V6 units which give a breathtaking performance. Maximum acceleration is delivered through their high-pressure fuel injection system, incorporating three fuel pumps, which deliver a very 'clean burn'. This helps make them some of the most environmentally friendly two-stroke engines on the market.
The Skipper Marcus Gladwell BSc Comb Eng.
Marcus has sailed round the world twice, spent two seasons working for Sir Chay Blyth's Challenge Business above the Arctic Circle, and in his younger days earned a living as a fisherman and then a diver.
He has been involved in charitable activities since 1987 when he joined Southwold Lifeboat crew. Marcus has been responsible for crew training from 1997 and took on the role of Senior Helm in 2001.
The Crew Doug Ashby, Dave Barber, Julian Barnwell, Linclon Barnwell, Nick Brooker, Chris Castle, Chris Chapman, Rupert Derham, Jack Fountain, Andrew Pilkington, Carl Slaymaker.
The crew are all highly experienced seafarers, most notable of whom is Doug Ashby, a marine engineer with an impressive pedigree of expertise who has recently worked with Gina Campbell (Donald Campbell's daughter).
Shore Crew Jerry Sherwood, Graham Ritches.
The Coastal Voyager was scheduled to make two stops a day. It would need 6000 litres of fuel, and 100 litres of two-stroke oil.
Getting logistics right, refuelling the boat and crew, was a vital factor in the success of the voyage. To ensure the maximum amount of money was raised, the crew paid for the running of the boat. |
